BALI, an island with a thousand temples and beautiful tropical beaches, known for its famous and unique culture all over the world. Each year, an enormous number of tourists from many different parts of the world come to this island to enjoy the scenic panorama of Bali or to learn and feel the Balinese culture which has been inherited from generation to generation by the locals. One among the appeal of Bali is a unique musical ensemble. An ensemble with a unique sound and a rich variety is called Gamelan. That is the musical accompaniment of various types of performing arts, rituals, and other important events in Bali. The unique harmony of Gamelan makes it well known as one of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in Indonesia.

of this “Balinese harmony” production is Tihingan Village. The village which is
located in Banjarangkan sub-district, Klungkung regency is the source where the
Balinese harmony came from. Chief of Tihingan customary village, I Made Soma
Wandita, said the village was inhabited by 150 households. Of that number,
about 50 households is gamelan craftsman. The rest had profession as farmer,
trader, carpenter, civil servant and police. Therefore, the majority of people
chose to work at their home village rather than outside the area. The
profession of making gamelan instrument is carried out through generations. In
general there are two groups of gamelan artisan, namely the group in charge of
making and forming various kinds of gamelan instruments and those being
competent in calibrating the gamelan tones.
Although
a very important role over the centuries to the sustainability of the arts in
Bali, Village Tihingan not placed in important positions within the tourism of
Bali. Therefore, until now the village is not equipped with adequate facilities
as a tourist attraction. There are no public toilets, souvenir stalls, food
stalls and drink, lodging, and special parking area there. Currently, tourists
who come to this country are those who deliberately visited the village
Tihingan because they are interested in gamelan instruments to be brought into
their country. Another visitor is a group that provides an alternative tour
package of visiting unusual and interesting places that rarely visited by
tourists in general.
